Chapter 2: We Meet Again

Chapter 2: We Meet again

It was 2006. A year after we graduated from our high schools, James showed up on my door step. I had just gotten back from working with my aunt folding newspapers so I was hot and stinky and a real mess. I feel like that's how a lot of our meet ups went. I was very surprised to see him. He asked me if I remembered him and I said "Of Course I remember him!" He was there because he wanted to invite me to his baptism. See he was a foster kid until age 18 when he was kicked out of the system. Because of this he wasn't able to be baptized or anything like that until he was an adult. So he went to all of our church functions but wasn't actually apart of our church. So he invited me to his baptism. I went. I didn't go because I had a crush on him because at that time I didn't. I went because we had been friends in the past and I wanted to support him. It was amazing. I cried. I felt the spirit there. And that was it. Well that was it for a while.

We had each other's phone numbers but never talked to each other. Then about a year after his baptism I had this feeling in the pit of my stomach while sitting in church that I needed to see how James was doing. I ignored it for awhile but eventually gave in and texted him. I sent him a text saying I was just thinking about him and wondering how he was doing and hoped he was well. That was it. He never responded until late that night. He called me. We talked for hours and got caught up with life. He said he had been living with his sister in Louisiana and just recently got back to Arizona. We talked many times after that through text messages and long phone calls. It was nothing serious just friends talking about stuff. At that time Myspace was a popular social media thing so I checked him out. It seemed as if he had a girlfriend while talking to me or they had just recently broke up.  I was so focused on school and my college courses that it was a nice break to have a friend to chat with and nothing more. He came by my house one time and since I needed to go buy my grandfather laundry soap he drove me to go get it. Still just friends and nothing more.

Then came the day when he said he wanted to take me out on a date. Not like a date-date but just as friends. I was excited but a little nervous since it seemed like he recently had a girlfriend so I was worried he was using me to make the other girl jealous. But I agreed.

Our first date James picked me up in his car. He opened the door for me like a gentleman. He took me to the Cheesecake Factory. I had no idea if he even had money to afford this expensive place. So I ordered the cheapest thing on the menu that I could find. A salad. After dinner we were supposed to go home but he convinced me to go see a movie with him. It was called Disturbia. I didn't really like the movie  but it gave me a chance to grab James' arm and pretend to be scared. That night when he dropped me off I figured we would go back to texting and talking as friends and nothing more because he told me that he just got out of a serious relationship and didn't want to get into anything serious again.

Then within that same week James wanted to "hang out" with me. By this time I was worried this was going to start affecting my school grades and I kind of got annoyed with him. I was excited for the attention but at the same time I just wanted him to leave me alone so I could just focus on school. We went and met up with his brother who was single at the time and was getting ready to play a soccer game with some other single people.  James and I kicked around the soccer ball and chit-chatted. Then James decided he was going to show me a really cool trick and balance on the soccer ball. Well he balanced on it for about a second or two but didn't last long. In slow motion I saw him falling towards me. Instead of trying to help him I got out of his way and he fell flat on his face. It was so funny! I was laughing so hard. He was laughing and yelling at me why didn't I save him. It was a good time. Well after that we didn't last long because it was the summer time in Arizona and it was super hot. So we decided to leave the soccer playing and go get some shaved ice. James wanted to be a gentleman and pay for our shaved ice so he swiped his card. And it got declined. He did it about 3 times before I offered to pay for it. We were technically not on a date so I was ok with paying for both of ours. Supposedly there must have been something wrong with his card but I found out later on that he totally had no money in the bank.

James continued to show up at my house and church functions that I was at to see me. We talked for hours at a time on the phone and texted each other as well. We had fun but nothing serious yet. Then he asked me to be his girlfriend. What!! Yes he did. After saying he didn't want to be in a serious relationship he asked me to be his girlfriend. And yes I said yes.
